I'm in Kentucky this week learning how to play Speed Golf. Played my first 18 holes this morning in 70 minutes. Such an awesome experience.

More on that later...

Today we answer 5 important questions and common issues people have with shallowing move in the golf swing.

In this issue:

  • What "shallowing" actually means (most people get this part wrong)
  • Why you're basically wired to swing it steep
  • The popular drill that secretly isn't shallowing at all
  • Band drills worth stealing for your warm up
  • I'm in Kentucky about to run my first 18 holes ๐Ÿ˜…

Long-time Huel guy! Glad to have them as a sponsor.

Usually I'm running to make a tee time or cramming a range session into an afternoon, and eating kind of takes a back seat.

You should know this about the idea of "shallowing"

โ€‹Luke Benoit and Justin Kraft are two coaches you've no doubt seen talk about "shallowing". We did a podcast this week to explain everything.

1. What does shallowing even mean

Justin explains it pretty simply..

"I always say shallowing is when the club head is lowering faster than the handle is."

Clubhead drops faster than the handle. If they drop together, that's lowering, not shallowing.
โ€‹

2. You're built to be steep (you probably haven't heard this one)

Luke had an interesting take on this one. The reason this feels impossible isn't you. It's a couple million years of throwing stuff.

"If you are in the Savannah and you're trying to throw a rock at an animal... you're going to throw it over the top. This is how humans move."

So how many of us shallow it naturally?

Justin's guess... around 10%

The other 90% of us are fighting a steep move.
โ€‹

3. Shallowing lets you "earn the right to rotate"

If you have early extension and you've tried to keep your butt back... But never had any success this might be why.

"You must earn the right by getting this move to happen adequately in your swing."

Early extension is often the body's way to the club shallow and make sure you don't stick the club into the ground a foot behind the ball.

Your steep and have to early extend.

Learn to shallow and you stop early extending because you've "earned the right to rotate".

4. Shallow does NOT mean draws

People hear "shallow" and start swinging way inside out.

"We are not saying go mess up your path and get inside out. In fact, that's the exact opposite."

Their proof: Akshay shallows it like crazy and hits a fade.
โ€‹

5. Physics can do it for you

"The club follows the butt of the club."

The clubhead wants to fall in line with wherever you move the grip. So:

  • Keep the club a little more vertical at the top
  • Get some depth in your hands
  • Move the handle toward the ball

Justin says it way better than this summary so you should watch and listen ๐Ÿ˜„

What most golfers get wrong

Trap 1: confusing lowering with shallowing. The "drop your hands in your right pocket and turn" drill? That's lowering. The shaft pitch never changed.

"That is just lower. That is not shallowing."

Trap 2: how you practice it.

(as you might guess Luke had some takes on this)

"Do not hit another golf ball until you can do it without a ball. And do not do it with a backswing until you can do the downswing."

Hit balls while you learn it and you just rebuild the old pattern.

We are all just wired to try and hit good shots and change our movement patterns.

๐ŸŽฏ Tried out the Tour Aim set up Wyndham used this past week while warming up at the US Open. I had never used it like this and it's legit. Total awareness on startline and target.

You NEED to try these band drills:

โ€‹I loved the video we posted last week with Jackson Koert.

I honestly believe the resistance band drills are a gamechanger and probably something you should be doing in your warm up before you hit any golf balls.

We made a little cheat sheet you can save on your phone to try out next time your at the range.

My first round of Speed Golf

End of July I'm playing in the US Speed Golf Open.

Why? Cause speed golf is super interesting to me.

  • club strategy and shot choice
  • hitting shots at a high heart rate
  • no pre-shot routine

I've been running since May 1 and right now as your reading this I'm probably wrapping up my first round ever.

I'm a bit concerned if I can go all 18 holes as I've never run 4-5 miles.

Here's my training so far. Pretty much the only running I've ever done in my life.

โ€‹
I've been incredibly excited for this trip and can't wait to report back next week with exactly how it went.

HUGE shout out to Garmin for sponsoring the series and making it happen. Fenix is a killer watch for running and golf. Highly recommend.

Have a great week!
