Few thoughts from my speed training + injury

  • My body is definitely holding me back from hitting 190 ball speed. My focus is going towards getting stronger so I can get there. The path seems clear. Just not as fun as hitting 180 last year though. 😩

  • If you have some pain... Dry Needling might be a great option. It's not painful and has been super helpful. We talk about how it works and show you what it looks like

  • My knee pain has absolutely come from me having no strength in my legs. We go through the exact workout plan that's getting me stronger. Here's a link to the pdf with what Chris has me doing.

  • The speed training session breakdown (70 swings, full workout warmup, and hitting 129 mph clubhead speed for the first time).

Welcome to Youtube Tommy.

Pretty cool if you ask me.

His video was showing his full tournament prep session. If you don't watch the vid here are some interesting thoughts from it.

Theme of the training - CALIBRATION:

I love this theme during pre tournament practice.

β€œBig theme is calibration.

You’ve seen on the rangeβ€”Plane Perfector, something for my strike, sticks around my head. Start line.

Short gameβ€”chip to nowhere. Some strike work in a bunker. All calibration kind of things.”

Structure Creates Freedom

Tommy talks about using all the training aids and structure so that he can swing freely inside of them.

β€œThe more constrained I make my swing, the freer it feels.”

Yardages are always dialed in

Every club. Three different swing types:

  • Full – max distance
  • Stock – tournament control
  • Smooth – feel shot or when adrenaline’s pumping

Then he does this in different conditions:

  • Hot weather yardages
  • UK/links turf numbers
  • Altitude-adjusted distances

Here’s everything he did over the course of his training. :

Full Swing

  • Plane Perfector to calibrate swing plane
  • Alignment sticks + box to check takeaway and impact
  • Start line gate drill (2 sticks, 6 feet in front of him)
  • TrackMan gapping: full, stock, smooth for each iron

Tee Shots

  • Visualized real tee shots using yardage book
  • Recreated shots on the range

Short Game

  • No-target chipping
  • 3-club ladder drill to one pin (low, mid, high flight)
  • Bunker circuit: upslope, downslope, perfect, average, plugged

Putting

  • T-Bar for face angle and start line
  • AimPoint slope board calibration (1%, 2%, 3%)
  • 2-putt pace challenge from different slopes
  • Grain awareness: adjusted reads based on how putts reacted

3 wood off the tee sucks. I know a bunch of you probably relate to that. I do! So I was curious when I saw this video from Neal Shipley about his 12 degree "thriver". I had to learn more. I was able to have a great chat with Marty Jertsen, VP Fitting & Performance at Ping all about it. It's such an interesting concept. PLUS this means the PODCAST IS BACK. I've been hearing you all loved the old Golf Science Lab show. So it's coming back. This is the first episode of many to come. Today at a...
