How to hit better distance control wedges.

As I've been working on my wedges and have been constantly referencing back to an incredible video we did with Mark Blackburn on the essentials of great wedge play.

Here are all the core concepts you need to remember...

The secret to elite wedge play is the ability to hit low launch with high spin shots.

The best players maintain the same amount of loft and lean on wedge shots which allows them to target a 2 yard distance dispersion window.

Wedge Essentials

  1. Low Launch, High Spin
    • Target Launch Angle: 27-30°
    • Low launch prevents ballooning, helping shots stop quickly. Aim for a peak height of 50-70 feet.
    • Why? Ensures predictability in wind and firm greens.
  2. Shaft Lean & Dynamic Loft
    • To get low launch you need shaft lean
    • Shaft Lean: 15° forward at impact, delivering about 45° of loft with a 60° wedge.
    • Maintain consistent dynamic loft for predictable distances across all wedges.
    • This often leads to more of a draw shot.
  3. Body Rotation Over Wrist Hinge
    • Key Tip: Minimize wrist hinge in your backswing.
    • Rotate your body through impact instead of sliding to maintain shaft lean and clean contact.
    • Visual Example: Steve Stricker’s wedge swing with minimal wrist action.
  4. Three Baseline Swings
    • Create three reliable swings:
      1. Short swing (7:30 position)
      2. Mid swing (lead arm parallel)
      3. Full swing (¾ position)
    • KEY CONCEPT: Adjust distance by changing your body rotation—not swing speed.
  5. Swing Tempo & Energy
    • Swing at 60-70% energy.
    • Think of it like an underhand toss. It's predictable and simple.
    • Swinging harder introduces inconsistencies in launch angle and spin.
  6. Common Mistakes
    • Swinging too hard increases unpredictable spin.
    • Poor loft control leads to distance dispersion. Control the loft to control the shot.

🤯Interesting Fact: You lose 20% of your spin after 750 shots with a wedge

🎥 Always enjoy a good film from EAL. His latest on the story of Ping is pretty dang cool. Going back to the actual house it all started at.

Storytime...

Last week, I had my first tournament of the year.

I was super excited going into it. But I had one of those days where my game just wasn't there.

Playing in a tournament is just different than practicing and I felt it.

After the round, I had to remind myself that our scores are going to be somewhere on a normal distribution bell curve.

You have low, middle, and high rounds, and my hope is this was one of the high rounds on that distribution curve.

Last year I actually did a poll of people asking about the ranges of scores over a year. Pretty crazy!

Our whole goal is just to move this curve lower and lower so our high scores get lower and our low scores get lower.

Time to get back to training and play some more golf 😁

Till next week,

-Cordie
