Controversial thoughts on Shot Shape + Alignment!

We're back with part two of our lesson with Dr. Luke Benoit.

He has some really controversial thoughts on shot shape and alignment, which he goes into detail about today.

I'll be curious to hear where a lot of you land on this. Agree or disagree?!

How to Actually Learn to Aim

I was pretty interested in Luke's ideas on aim. It is definitely different than I had heard before from other folks...

Most golfers think alignment rods = better aim. But as Luke says:

“If you’re bad at alignment, using alignment rods all the time is not the way out of it.”

Why? Because alignment rods don’t teach you to aim without them, which is what matters most on the course.

  • “Before people actually used alignment rods 40–50 years ago, they could still aim.”

The Fix:

  1. “Unless you're doing mechanics, switch targets every single time.”
  2. “Literally aim, put the club down at your toes, and check.”
  3. “Never aim at flags—because you're not doing that on the golf course.”
  4. “You can pick one club… pick three or four different targets and consistently check until you can verify you're actually good at it.”

What You’ll Learn:

“When they set up the same way and lock into that target… dispersion pattern is tighter. But if they switch targets, dispersion increases by 50%—unless they’ve practiced that way.”

This Week’s Top Finds:

🫁 Been doing a lot of looking into breathe work lately. Saw this post and thought it was just a great simple exercise to add into daily routines.

Cool ball striking drill from one of the great ball strikers Charles Howell III.

📊 We had three different types of players in the playoff at the Rocket, that's for sure.

I've been trying to track my golf game pretty religiously this year. Making notes about my practice sessions and tournaments. Trying to make observations about my swing thoughts, patterns, and what I've been doing. I've been doing it in this app called Day One, which I use for all my daily journaling and logging, but it's getting cluttered and hard to sort through. Curious what you all do? I'd love to know. Hit reply and let me know. And then read on for the rest of this week's Golf Well...
