Will's top 5 pieces advice for me :)
I asked Coach Will to give me five things I should focus on in my game.
I figured Iβd share them with you too, since I bet a lot of you will find them just as helpful.
1. Start with a Go-To Club
Problem: You bomb the driver one day⦠and the next day might not be able to hit a fairway.
Fix: Have a reliable fairway finder when you're not feeling it. No one has their driver dialed and ready to go every day you need to have another go-to shot ready.
Checklist:
- Choose a go-to club (e.g., 2-iron, 5-wood, hybrid).
- Relentlessly practice hitting it into a 30 yard fairway on the range.
- Know when to bench the driver (tight tee shot, first few holes, no warm-up).
β
2. Know Your Yardages!
Problem: Feels like everything goes the same distance and no clarity on what yardages your clubs go.
Fix: Chart your yardages for every swing: 9:00 swing, ΒΎ, full, smash. Build out a matrix of distances for each iron.
Checklist:
- Use a launch monitor to get real data.
- Record 10 shots each: 9:00 swing, ΒΎ, full, smash.
- Create a personal yardage chart for each club.
β
3. Master the Wedge Clock System
Problem: Youβre launching wedges to the moon and guessing on distances.
Fix: Train your body to deliver consistent swing lengths like 9:00, 10:30, and full. Combine this with tempo and launch angle control to hit specific yardages from 50β120 yards.
Drill: The Clock System Ladder
- Pick one wedge.
- Hit 3 shots each at 9:00, 10:30, and full swings.
- Chart distance + ball flight.
- Switch clubs and repeat.
β
4. Expand Your Chipping Arsenal
Problem: Youβre addicted to the lob wedge.
Fix: Practice chipping with multiple clubs (9-iron, PW, SW, LW) to understand rollout and landing zones. Itβs not always about spinning it close; sometimes itβs about playing the easy shot that has the highest percentage of getting within 8 ft of the hole.
Checklist:
- Practice chips with at least 4 clubs.
- Learn where each lands and how it rolls out.
- Use lower-lofted clubs when possible for simplicity and control.

5. Train Putts from 6 to 15 Feet
Problem: Youβre solid inside 4 feet, but the make percentage goes downhill from 8-12 feet.
Fix: Use games like the 10-point Putting Game to challenge yourself under pressure and build consistency at scoring distances.
