Golf season’s winding down for a lot of us. (My last round of MN golf was this morning!)

Whether you’re playing your last round of the year or heading indoors to start winter training, I’ve got some super useful ideas for you.

Have a few rounds left in your season? Try this...

Before your next round:

  1. Pick a realistic score for today, not your best.
  2. Count your bogeys. Shooting 78 on a par 72 means 6 to spend.
  3. Pick which holes get them. The first hole always gets one. Start with the hardest holes on the card.
  4. When you stand on the hardest par4 on the course and suddenly it's now a par 5 your mindset totally changes.
  5. Split the round into 3 6-hole tournaments.

The takeaway: Set better expectations. Play for your par and ignore what's on the scorecard.

Lower stress and tension leads to better golf.

🚨NEW PODCAST: Why Hitting Balls All Winter Won’t Fix Your Swing

Luke might have one of the most unique winter training programs for junior golfers. We chatted about it quickly but here's the summary of how they train.

1 - No ball until the swing looks right. Video at every station, “freezers,” mechanics first.

2 - Four parts, in order. Mechanics, calibration, transfer, then play.

3 - Your split depends on your swing. Good mechanics but a 10 handicap? Less swing work, more transfer training.

4 - Make it uncomfortable. Saturday tournaments all winter, kids 6 to 16 posting a number under pressure.

“We are kind of blinded to the model of, we need to hit a golf ball to get better. But this makes your learning so slow when you’re trying to change your golf swing.”

- Dr. Luke Benoit

Other things we talked about that were interesting:

  • The drill Luke gave me for “harpooning” my driver (too much hand speed, too late)
  • Why “clear your hips” might be bad advice
  • Should you lean the handle forward with driver?
  • Palm vs fingers: match your grip to your engine
