The Garmin Fenix 8 does two things, which is why it's on my wrist every single day.
On the course, it has tons of data. Maps for 43,000+ courses, front and back numbers, hazards, all of it. Syncs up with my range finder.
Off the course, it does everything else. Runs, workouts, heart rate, sleep, recovery. It even tells me each morning if I've got a hard day in me or if I should ease off.
I went into the lab with Justin Kraft and Dr. Luke Benoit for a full on swing breakdown and lesson. I really wanted a full game plan and blueprint for my swing. What needs to change, what doesn't, and exactly how to practice.
We didn't cut much. You get to see the whole process of what great coaching actually looks like.
Here's a teaser of what we went through:
The setup fault that's been hiding in my swing since 2015 (we pulled up the old footage)
A 30-second setup check you can do at home with one club
Why fixing the root cause made a hand-path problem I've never been able to fix just... go away
Justin and Luke don't agree on what I should fix next. Two different practice plans, side by side
The tech we used: The guys used a few different pieces of tech throughout. Thought I should outline what those were and why.
Parallax: This software automatically records when you swing. During this video we jut had a phone in the back of the room and recorded all the swings. Really cool practice tool, and the analysis features are solid too.
Sportsbox: Justin used this for his 3D analysis. He knows it really well so was easy for him to utilize to check some things he wanted more info on.
Elva: Luke has this 3d system installed at his studio. It's basically a research-grade motion caption system and super accurate, so we used it to double-check a few things.
What I learned (outside of the specific technical changes)
If you need to make a big change, just make the change.
Really go for it. Exaggerate it. Make it look right on video.
You'll hit it terribly. It'll feel terrible. And you're going to be doing the right thing.
If you stay with what's comfortable and just okay... you're never going to change.
Get uncomfortable.
I also saw a few comments on YouTube and IG saying this was all too complicated.
I couldn't disagree more. Everybody is working on something mechanical in their swing. Tiger. Rory. The best in the world.
For me it's always been random. Hit some balls, work on one thing, then a couple weeks later work on something totally different.
This gave me a real blueprint. If I'm going to work on something technical, I know exactly what it is. I think every golfer should have that.
Now, do I work too much on technique? Absolutely 😂. Luke and Justin talked about it a lot in the video.
🎯 Have you been watching Bryson's Backyard Games? What a brilliant format and something that's so easy and fun to watch. Just think they nailed this one.
