The Modern Golf Swing Explained (finally makes sense)

"The modern swing is a swing that helps a player control the club face as best as possible,"

"And for me, it involves shallow arm mechanics and steep body mechanics."

Some really interesting comments on our latest video on the modern swing with Justin Kraft.

THE QUICK SUMMARY: Modern Golf Swing

What actually is the “modern golf swing”? Shallow Arms + Steep Body.

Most of us do the exact opposite... We stand up through impact (shallow body/early extension) and throw our hands at the ball (steep arms/over-the-top).

Why worry about all this stuff? Club face control.

"The modern swing helps a player control the club face as best as possible."

Here is the blueprint to flipping the script:

  • The Setup: Stop sticking your butt out. Tuck your pelvis under your torso. If your butt is too far back at address, the only place it can go during the swing is forward (hello, early extension).
  • The Backswing: Keep it steep. If you roll the club inside early (shallow backswing), your brain will force you to steepen it on the way down. You have to "earn the right" to shallow the club by keeping it outside your hands on the way back.
  • The Downswing: In transition, two things happen at once:
    1. Your chest actually lowers and covers the ball (rotates while staying in posture).
    2. The trail elbow tucks in front of the shirt seam (external rotation).
In the video, Justin goes through 5+ more great drills to try out if you want to feel these concepts in your swing.

The simplest and best way to feel this is the "choke down" drill

  • Grip at very bottom of handle
  • Club hovers 6-8 inches off ground
  • Forces you to lower chest to make contact
  • "You have to earn the right to stay in posture"

Don't Overthink It

You don't need to swing like Michael LaSasso to play good golf. Justin and I wanted to share what the modern swing looks like and how it's taught.

Hopefully there's something here that will help you!

"If you're steep and you stand up or stall through impact, we just need to get it 10-20% better. If you can take little bitty pieces of it, I think we can learn some things."

So the question I leave you with...

What do you need to make 10% better than yesterday?

🎁 DEAL: Want to actually understand how to read greens?

Ralph Bauer's Tour Aim app teaches you the Tour Read Method, the same system PGA Tour winners use to read greens with precision. We did a video with Ralph last year showing how this works, and it's legitimately game-changing.

The app measures slope with your phone, shows you exact break and pace, and trains you to read greens without it., and we got you an exclusive deal. Try it for 3 months at $9.99

MYTH OF THE WEEK

Myth #5: Good practice means perfect setup and alignment.

Most golfers think if they just set up with a perfeclty square stance, textbook alignment, ball in the same spot every time... they’ll finally find consistency.

Dr. Luke Benoit says that mindset actually slows learning.

When he trains juniors, he uses the “seven-ball drill.” He lines up seven golf balls across the mat and has players hit each one without moving their feet. Every swing requires a new angle, a new distance, a new feel. None of it is perfect. That’s the point.

Here’s what happens when you train this way:

  • You stop obsessing over textbook positions.
  • You start developing hand-eye coordination and contact awareness.
  • You learn how to adapt to real-world conditions >> uphill lies, uneven turf, awkward stances.

Luke compares it to how kids learn sports. A 5-year-old swinging a bat doesn’t care about perfect form, they just figure out how to hit the ball. That exploration builds better long-term skill than any amount of “perfect” practice.

So if your setup isn’t identical every time, don’t panic. You’re building the kind of athletic, flexible golf motion that actually holds up under pressure.

(every week we're going to share an interesting myth and truth from Dr Luke Benoit from Ryp Golf. Fascinating ideas that will make you think.)

Road to 190 update

After a couple weeks off resting a sore wrist I'm back making progress on the road to 190.

Had a great speed session and hit 127mph club speed!

I've settled into a rhythm of spending 1 day a week going nuts trying to break my personal best.

And then the rest of the week getting in some smaller sets of 12-20 balls focused on technique and improving speed/power in the gym. Primarily focused on all lower body.

If you really want to kill your legs try this...

1 - Do a solid 15-20 minute warm up in the gym. Entire body ready to go.

2 - Hit 30-40 balls. Max effort. Sets of 6-8 with 3 minute rest in between.

3 - Back to the gym and do some contrast training. High weight and then explosive move (goblet squat into box jump)

Biggest change so far... I can now get over and stay above 120mph club speed way easier.

Now we just have to push through that 127 number up towards 130.

I'm feeling confident with a month left!

Justin Kraft showed me something that made me immediately pull up my own swing on video. There are two distinct wrist patterns on tour. 60% of pros use one. 20% use another (60+20=100% 🧐 ). Once you know which pattern you fall into, a lot of other stuff starts to click. Here's what's in this newsletter: The two wrist patterns (and which one you should probably learn) Jake Knapp's wedge drill that might injure you Some unexpected speed gains I made this week A Mumford and Sons endorsement...
