Carry distance based on time of day + Road to 180 update

Nothing better than drinking coffee, reading this newsletter, and watching The Open. 😃

I've been to The Open once and it was here at Troon in 2016. We went to the World Scientific Congress of Golf in St Andrews and then over to the tournament.

Incredible memories.

I can still vividly remember sitting at the very top of the bleachers next to the postage stamp hole and seeing 3-4 different holes plus the Firth of Clyde off in the background.

Best view.

ā± Does time of day affect yardages?

Stumbled on this little insight on the Trackman blog.

They looked at the difference between morning and afternoon rounds of golf when the temperature can vary by 10+ degrees.

Intuitively I'm sure we all know that on a hot summer day you're much likely to hit it farther than a cold spring morning but what about during the same day?

If you look at the examples below from the same 9 iron but hit at different times of the day, you can see how much the numbers can change. The shot order was hit at 55 degrees, 70 degrees, then 95 degrees.

šŸ’§ Buy used golf balls?

This might be one of the more random studies you can find on the internet.

The study looked the performance of Titleist Pro V1 golf balls submerged in ponds for up to one year.

TAKEAWAY: It found no significant difference in distance or dispersion between submerged and control balls, though submerged balls showed color changes.

🧠 Where should you tee up?

This is one of the things I see TONS of golfers completely miss. I've been hitting a draw this year and can't imagine not teeing it up on the left side.

Watch this great video from LKD.

  • Pro Golfers: Margin of error is 3 to 4.5 degrees on either side of their target.

  • Am Golfers (90-shooters): Margin of error is closer to 7 degrees.

  • Yardage Impact: Each degree offline translates to 4.3 to 5.3 yards.

  • Example: On a fairway tilted 17 degrees to the right, teeing up on the left can create a miss buffer, providing an extra 1.5 degrees (about 10 yards) of right-side leeway.

šŸŽ„ Bryson goes in-depth on how he's practicing and prepping for The Open?

video preview
  • Adapts his practice based on the specific requirements of different courses, such as iron play for Augusta and chipping for Pinehurst.

  • Bryson also talks through exactly how he thinks about hitting wedge shots into wind. Loved that part.

Have a great Open week!

3 wood off the tee sucks. I know a bunch of you probably relate to that. I do! So I was curious when I saw this video from Neal Shipley about his 12 degree "thriver". I had to learn more. I was able to have a great chat with Marty Jertsen, VP Fitting & Performance at Ping all about it. It's such an interesting concept. PLUS this means the PODCAST IS BACK.
