Bryson's homemade 5-iron + why front pins kill your score

Happy Masters week.

Let's get into it.

โ€‹
In this issue:

  • Bryson 3D-printed his own 5-iron. Seriously.
  • Why front pins are costing you strokes
  • This week's top finds
  • Home gym build... what would you put in yours?

HOW HAVE YOU NOT GOTTEN THE NEW GOLFWELL GUIDEBOOK?! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

The Scoring Edge is on Amazon. All our best info from the top coaches! I guarantee you'll be referencing this guidebook for years to come.

If you have bought it and you've enjoyed GolfWell over the years. A Review on Amazon would mean a ton to me. Thank you!

Somebody go get a picture of this 5 iron?!

Quote from Bryson yesterday.

DeChambeau told ESPN on Wednesday that he'll play with a 5-iron that he fabricated himself with a 3D printer.
โ€‹
โ€‹
How does that even work?! Does the USGA test it? Is there actually not another iron out there that can get close to what he needs. Lots of questions.

What a bag of clubs!

His bag currently includes a Krank driver and fairway woods, Avoda irons and Bettinardi wedges.

And a 5-iron DeChambeau built himself.

This Weekโ€™s Top Finds:

๐ŸŽฏ Really nice video from LKD at Golf Digest on the strategy on #3 at Augusta. I had never seen this heat map showing where players are making birdies and where they're not from.

โ€‹
Watch for this throughout the week and you'll have an idea of where guys are hitting off the tee and why.

๐ŸŽ๏ธ This video with Ian Poulter and Peter Finch going through his golf and car collection was epic. The scope of how much golf gear he has is wild.

โ€‹
โ€‹

โžก๏ธ The new Putt Out Airbreak Max is AWESOME. You can hit sloping putts that are 12 ft to two different cups.
โ€‹
Great piece of kit if you have the room at home. And it's only $650! That's a great deal for the value it delivers.

๐Ÿ  The scale of Augusta National's real estate purchases is NUTS. Honestly they're buying everything they can it seems like.

Over the last 25 years, the club has spent more than $280 million (and upwards of $500 million when accounting for property appraisals) to systematically purchase nearly all land surrounding the golf course

Why Front Pins Are Costing You Strokes (And What to Do About It)

From 160-180 yards, tour pros hit the green 71% of the time to a back pin. Move that pin to the front? It drops to 57%. Same distance. 14% fewer greens hit.

Scott Fawcett's take: "You cannot make enough birdies to offset hitting the green 14% less."

What to do:

  • Land it past the pin. Accept 15+ feet long. That's the good outcome.
  • Don't try to land it between the front edge and the flag. That's a zero-margin hero shot.
  • If you come up short anyway, don't compound it. Chip past the hole and two-putt. DO NOT MAKE A DOUBLE.
    โ€‹

One sentence version: fly it past the pin, lag it back, move on.
